KUCHING: Transport operators and the services sector must perform to the highest level to provide the public, especially travellers, greater confidence.
This advice was given by Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday, pointing out that all sectors of the society play a significant role in making Sarawak an environment-friendly, safe, secure and healthy place.
“Quality management and control also apply to all facilities such as toilets,” he emphasised at the launching of the Safety, Health and Aviation Security Campaign held at Kuching International Airport (KIA).
“We must continue to establish good habits which have always been part of our culture and cleanliness is part of our culture,” he said, pointing out that dirty toilets remained one of the problems that required continuous efforts to tackle.
“Poor toilet culture will reflect badly on the people and portray a negative image of the state,” he reminded. Abang Johari suggested that ways be worked out to improve cleanliness.
“We could, for instance, assign cleaners to do extra cleaning work during peak hours,” he said.
He said it was imperative to have facilities with the highest standard as the state was expected to receive 36 million visitors and tourism revenue of RM168 million by 2020.
Noting the importance of safety and security in the workplace, Abang Johari highlighted that such practice should be an integral part of any organisation.
“Apart from airports, all transport operators including land, air and water should ensure a safe and secure working environment not only for their employees but also users,” he said.
“We should strengthen our weakness, when detected, and innovate in the process,” he added.
The two-day annual campaign, themed ‘Enhancing Safety and Security in Aviation’ was jointly organised by MAB and MASwings. It aimed to reinforce safety and security at the workplace to avoid injuries and fatalities amongst the staff.
During the campaign, various activities were organised including talks by Department of Safety and Health (DOSH), Socso, National Institute for Safety and Health (Niosh), Malaysia Airports, Malaysia Airlines Corporate Safety and Health (MAS COSH) and MASwings Corporate Safety and Quality (MW CSQ).
Other exciting activities included Zumba and Safety Booth Treasure Hunt Challenge Quiz.
A number of exhibition booths were set up by Sarawak Energy Berhad, Fire and Rescue Department and National Blood Bank to display safety materials and information.
Also present were Malaysia Airports (MAB) KIA senior manager Sunif Naiman and MASwings chief executive officer Datuk Captain Mohd Nawawi Awang.
