ALOR STAR: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is investigating the explosion aboard a boat under repair at a shipyard in Sungai Udang, Yan, on Monday which left two workers seriously injured.
A state DOSH spokesman said its investigation team would be deployed to the scene to establish whether the company concerned had complied with safety regulations.
"We will submit the investigation paper to the legal adviser for the next course of action once we complete the probe," he said yesterday.
When asked whether the department was slapping a stop-work order on the shipyard operator, he said it would be decided based on recommendations from the investigators.
On Monday, two workers at the shipyard suffered serious burns when the boat exploded as the duo were inspecting a leakage on its tank.
Mohd Shamsul Asfanizal Omar, 24, and trainee Nik Mohd Shafik Nik Mat, 19, were rushed to Yan Hospital before being transferred to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) in Alor Star.
Yesterday Shamsul was transferred to Penang Hospital.
HSB director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said Shafik sustained 40 per cent burns on his face and both arms, besides suffering a broken metatarsal bone on his left foot.
Shafik's mother, Rahmah Osman, 50, described the incident as God's will and prayed for her son's speedy recovery.
"I had a shock when I was informed about the incident however I am grateful that my son survived," she said at the hospital yesterday.
