MRT CEO should take the rap over incident

KUALA LUMPUR: National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has urged Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd’s chief executive officer to take full responsibility over last night’s accident at the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT line construction site.
NIOSH chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the onus was now on MRT Corp CEO
Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid to fullfill the project developer’s commitment to uphold safety standards.
Lee said, early in July this year, Wira Azhar had written to the media on promoting safety culture at all MRT sites and also pledged a commitment to occupational safety and health.
“He needs to ensure that his commitment is translated into concrete actions by the contractors, construction safety professionals and employees,” he said.
He said such an accident at MRT construction sites is a cause for concern as the public had expressed their fears for safety as they drive past these sites, and when they get caught in a traffic jam at road diversion around MRT construction sites.
Three Bangladeshi workers are feared dead after a concrete span along the construction site at Kota Damansara collapsed at 8.30pm last night.
The first body out of the three was recovered at about 2.30am today.
Lee also expressed shock over the incident and was saddened by the incident.
