DOSH seals 43 tower cranes over safety issues - The Star Online

The Star Online, 08 September 2016

KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has sealed 43 tower cranes for flouting various safety and maintenance measures.

This was out of the 156 tower cranes inspected in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor and Penang as on the third day of the department’s crackdown.

Of the 43 cranes sealed, 16 were in Kuala Lumpur, 17 in Selangor, eight in Johor and two in Penang.

The department also identified 15 tower crane operators or drivers without certificates of competence – six in Kuala Lumpur, four in Selangor and five in Johor.

All the operators screened in Penang during the operation so far were confirmed to be registered with the department.

DOSH’s blitz on construction sites with unsafe tower cranes and illegal tower crane operators began in the four areas on Monday, following a tragedy in Bukit Bintang on Aug 25 in which a 500kg crane hook fell and killed a 24-year-old woman driving along Jalan Raja Chulan.

At the city centre here, DOSH sealed one of the two tower cranes at a construction site yesterday.

The tower crane was found with loose bolts, which were meant for securing the hook in place.

Kuala Lumpur DOSH director Ir. Zailee Dollah said the contractor will have to properly secure the bolts and submit a report.
