DOSH records 1,248 workplace accidents in 10 sectors

THE Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) recorded 1,248 workplace accidents in 10 sectors in the first five months of this year, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.

Deputy Human Resource Minister Datuk Ismail Abd Muttalib said of them, 68 were fatal, permanent disability (81) and without permanent disability (1,099).

He said the sectors involved were manufacturing; mining and quarrying; construction; agriculture; forestry and fisheries; facilities; transportation; storage and communication; wholesaling and retailing; hotels and restaurants; finance, insurance, real estate and services; and civil service.

The manufacturing sector made up the highest number of workplace accidents at 62 per cent with 774 cases, comprising 30 fatal cases, permanent disability (61) and without permanent disability (683), he said when replying to a question from Senator S.T Chandra Mohan.

Ismail said in an effort to instil safety culture, DOSH conducted health and safety legislation compliance audit and carried out 177,000 enforcement checks in all sectors of industry during the period.

DOSH has been carrying out promotions and conducting training to help raise occupational safety and health awareness among employees and employers, he said, adding that the Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan 2011-2015 was being enforced to reduce workplace accidents

by 30 per cent and fatal accidents by 20 per cent by 2015. — Bernama
