Committee to look into enhancing workers’ safety

SIBU: A special committee studying the ecosystem of the construction sector is looking into practical ways to enhance workers’ safety, revealed Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusuf.
“To come up with the measures, the committee comprising experts from various fields will look into the materials, procedures, processes and workflow in the construction sector,” he told The Borneo Post.
“Workers’ skill level and awareness of occupational safety and health will also be studied,” said Fadillah who is also Petra Jaya MP.
Asked on the recommendations, he said this would depend on the outcome of the industrial dialogue.
According to Bernama, the Works Ministry would table a proposal to improve the overall ecosystem of the construction sector to reduce the risk of accident or disaster to the cabinet.
Fadillah had said besides the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh), members of the special committee included architects, engineers and industry players.
The committee would study weaknesses of laws in the construction sector, as well as improve coordination between the private and government agencies.
