Ministry of Education to empower function of School Safety Committees

The Borneo Post Online, 23 April 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education will direct the management of schools nationwide to strengthen the role and function of the School Safety Committee to doubly ensure the safety of pupils.

The Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the committees will be requested to maintain its infrastructure at all times not only within their compounds but also in the vicinity as well.

“All school managements are advised to be on the alert for any eventuality and take steps to prevent undesirable incidents.

“The safety of pupils should be of the highest priority at all times.

“Both in the classrooms and during school activities outside,” he told reporters after the national launch of the Friends of PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund Corporation) here yesterday.

He was commenting on the incident of a Primary Four pupil, Huguan Isaac, 10, from SK Sacred Heart in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, whose cheek was pierced with a metal rod on Monday when the boy stepped on a metal drain cover while playing with his friend after school.

Among the measures to be taken included Occupational Health and Safety Programme in schools, to create awareness on the importance of school safety, he added. — Bernama
