Penang DOSH to step up enforcement at construction sites

New Straits Times Online, 20 May 2014

BUTTERWORTH: The state Department of Occupational Safety and Health will strengthen the enforcement at the construction sites to ensure the safety of the workers and the public around the area.

Its director Mohd Anuar Embi said the department has been conducting spot checks at 82 construction sites in the state since March this year.

He said the department has issued 184 notices with 51 compounds for various offences. Two cases have been brought to court.

“We have issued 79 notices to stop construction works, 84 notices of improvement and 16 warning letters.

“We have also seized five machineries for the offences related to technical,” he said at the press conference in Kompleks Sempilai Jaya near here early this morning.

Mohd Anuar said at least five spot checks will be conducted this year.

“Our objective is to ensure developers, contractors and construction workers pay full attention on the safety and health at the site.

“We would not compromise with any failure relating to the safety and health of the workers,” he said.
