PETALING JAYA: The remains of the three victims of the Monday MRT worksite accodemt near Kota Damansara arrived in Bangladesh yesterday morning.
In a statement, Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) said the remains of Mohamad Faruk Khan, 38, Mohammad Alauddin Mollik, 34, and Mohammad Elahi Hossain, 27, arrived at the Shahjalal Inter-national Airport in Dhaka at 8am Malaysian time.
The trio died when a concrete span fell on them during the construction of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT line.
“MRT Corp expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and regrets the unfortunate incident. Investigations are under way to determine the cause of the incident.
“Once completed, action will be taken against the responsible party,” said MRT Corp, which also thanked the Bangladesh High Commission for its assistance in arranging for the repatriation of the remains.
Meanwhile, the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has called for immediate intervention by the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH) to prosecute employers who neglect workplace safety.
In a statement yesterday, CAP president SM Mohamed Idris said MRT Corp’s former CEO, Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid (who resigned a day after the incident) should be prosecuted for breaching Section 15 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 and his failure to ensure the worksite is safe.
SM Mohamed said since fatalities resulting from falls at worksites were increasing, DOSH and relevant departments should immediately implement measures to ensure that workers are adequately protected from such hazards.
