Skill, Knowledge and Experience
The basic safety and health knowledge and an understanding of the general safety and health risks are important so that every worker can protect his own safety and health and understand the effect that his own actions could have on others.
The basic safety and health knowledge is:
- Can identify hazards in construction site;
- Knowledge of basic construction safety legislation;
- Knows security arrangements and procedures;
- Knows emergency arrangements;
- Can identify deteriorating conditions leading to increased risk;
- Increasing knowledge of priority risks on site and approved control methods;
- Can participate fully and confidently in site consultation;
- Knowledge in relation to statutory requirements on PPE, reporting and duties of employees; and
- Sufficient knowledge to instruct trainee in safe systems of work.
This basic understanding should be the foundation for other detailed safety and health knowledge.
Assessment of basic safety and health knowledge is essential for all workers who work on or regularly visit sites such as engineers, architects, surveyors, inspectors and client's agent.
