KUCHING: Kuching International Airport (KIA) recorded no loss-time accidents so far this year.

Highlighting this yesterday, Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MAB) KIA senior manager Sunif Naiman said KIA also recorded 365 days with no untoward accidents last year.

“It is our aspiration that the workforce at KIA will continuously work safely, maintain a safe working environment and further reduce numbers of injuries,” he said at the launching of Safety, Health and Aviation Security Campaign 2013 by Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at KIA here.

As such, Sunif, who was representing MAB senior general manager (Operations Services) Dato Azmi Murad, pointed out that the campaign was an effort to further inculcate safety and security culture among airport workers. The two-day annual campaign, themed ‘Enhancing Safety and Security in Aviation’ was jointly organised by MAB and MASwings.

“Among the objectives are providing information on identifying hazards, assessing risks associated with those hazards and ways to prevent hazards,” he said.

“Additionally, through this exercise, we are able to strengthen our relationship and alliances with airport enforcement and vice versa,” he added. Sunif urged all employees in KIA to embrace the importance of working safely and keeping the workplace safe at all times, towards making KIA one of the safest airports to work in.

Meanwhile, MASwings chief executive officer Datuk Captain Mohd Nawawi Awang agreed that such a campaign was an effective way to elevate awareness of safety, security and health in the aviation industry.

‘We must strive to achieve zero incident and accident workplace, noting that we are operating and working in a high risk industry,” he asserted.

“Our main priority has always been to ensure the delivery of safe and secure operations and services, both in flight as well as on the ground,” he said.

Together with MAB, Nawawi said they would work to synergistically achieve the goal of further enhancing safety and security within the work environment, be readily alert against threats within the surroundings and practice all safety and security procedures that had been implemented.

“MASwings will continue to strive to be a reliable air carrier not only in Malaysia but also among the global community,” he said.

“We will also work together to facilitate coordination of civil aviation activities in the region and provide overall guidance and harmonisation in the implementation of aviation safety standards and procedures in the region,’ he added.

Nawawi emphasised that this was a vital step to ensure that Malaysia’s aviation system was one of the safest and most efficient, and met the highest standards in the world.
