Board identifies 6 major causes of accidents at construction sites

Borneo Post Online, 3 January 2013

SARIKEI: Construction Industries Development Board (CIDB) identified six major causes of accidents at construction sites which could result in death or serious injuries of workers.

There are fall from a height, hit by objects, pinned by building materials or machinery, buried under collapsed holes, fire and electrocution.

Managing director of M-arcorp Enterprises Sdn Bhd, Mashan Ahmad Rais revealed this when conducting a CIDB Green Card course in Sibu near here.

For that reason, it was compulsory for CIDB-registered construction contractors (individuals or companies) to attend the Green Card course, he said, explaining that the course aims to expose construction contractors and workers to the common causes of accidents and ways to prevent them.

Course participants were exposed to Sections 15 and 24 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) which touched on the general responsibilities of construction contractors and workers.

The participants were also exposed to certain regulations under the Factory and Machinery Act that had to be observed while construction work was in progress.

Participants were also given information on the importance of accident insurance which CIDB extended to registered contractors and workers attending the Green Card course.

A total of 37 CIDB-registered contractors and workers from Sibu, Sarikei and Mukah attended the course.
