CIDB joins City Hall for spot checks

The New Straits Times Online, 16 September 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) recently held a joint spot check with City Hall on a construction site in Persiaran KLCC.

Although CIDB has carried out 300 spot checks this year, this was the first joint effort with City Hall.

The spot check was carried out as construction workers of the 37-storey service apartments were seen working without safety helmets and harnesses.

The construction work began in 2009.

"If we find serious safety procedures breached, we would refer the case to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health," said CIDB Kuala Lumpur director Othman Razali.

"We focus on safety but at the same time, check whether the foreign workers are here with valid green cards."

Carrying green cards to the construction site is mandatory for all foreign workers.

Out of 201 workers, 32 were found to be without green cards while two sub-contractors had expired licences.

There was also an offence under Section 46 of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974 where City Hall's information board on the project was not erected.

The main contractor was issued notices of these offences and could be fined up to RM50,000 if action was not taken in a timely manner.

CIDB has been carrying out spot-checks nationwide since 2011.

"We can see positive results from these operations, especially in giving awareness to the industry players. We want them to have a conducive construction site to have higher productivity in a safe environment," said Othman.
