KUALA LUMPUR: Many must have noticed concrete structures "hanging" in the air above junctions and highways at LRT Line Extension Project (LEP) and fear for their safety.

Well fear not. Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana) gives the assurance that the best techniques in constructing the guideway for the project are being used.

Its Project Development group director Zulkifli Md Yusoff said the structures that were perceived to be "hanging" should not be a threat.

Although the structures appeared incomplete, they were firmly secured, he said in a statement.

"Therefore, the question of the Segmental Box Girders (SBGs) works being conducted in unsafe manner does not arise at all.

"In addition, all LEP-related construction activities are monitored and approved by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the local authorities to ensure compliance of safety regulations and guidelines," he added.

"All safety processes and procedures are strictly observed and adhered to by our contractors," he added.

Zulkifli assured the public and motorists that even in the current unpredictable weather condition, the SBGs although appeared to be hanging, would not be affected as the cantilever section in its present state was safely secured.

In completing the construction of the SBGs, he said Prasarana's LEP contractors would implement several measures to ensure the safety of the motorists.

This included conducting the launching process at night when traffic was less congested, proper traffic management and diversions while heavy lifting was in progress, as well as safety netting to prevent the construction debris from falling onto the highway, he added. - Bernama
