'Bosses, staff must ensure safety'

New Straits Times Online, 23 March 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: Making the workplace safe is a joint responsibility of both the employers and the employees as it is no longer possible to merely provide work instructions to employees without supplementing them with education and training on safety and health, said National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

He said the management should allocate an annual budget on safety training to prevent work-related accidents.

"Workplace accidents and diseases can affect the quality of life and family members as well as the community.

"The concept of innovative transformation in occupational safety and health also takes into consideration the elements of the workplace, wellness and total health promotion programme to secure the maximum health and well-being of the employees.

"It is heartening and inspiring to note that both the public and private sectors are collaborating and putting together investments and networks, working towards the common goal of sustainable and integrated safety and health for the workforce."

Lee said the quest for sustainability was already starting to transform the competitive landscape.

"The 17th Conference of Occupational Safety and Health in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 25 to 27 will be a good forum to promote occupational safety and health.

"It is the best avenue for those striving to upgrade the safety and health standards in their organisations."
