Niosh ready to work closely with tourism operators

NewStraitsTimes Online, 8 April 2014

LABUAN: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) is ready to work closely with tourism operators in the country to implement awareness programmes based on occupational safety and health aspects in the workplace.

Niosh chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the emphasis to reduce accident rates in the hospitality industry, including tourism, hotel and supporting industries, should be intensified following the vibrant development and activities in the country that made Malaysia a global tourist attraction.

However with the setting up of various occupational activities, including in the hospitality industry, he said, it was undeniable that accidents involving foreign tourists could occur.

Disclosing this to reporters here, he said initiatives, such as awareness programmes should be implemented so that Niosh could recommend effective management methods through education dissemination activities, information and training to ensure workers were not only aware of the risks they faced but also risks involving the public at the workplace.

He said the opening of the latest Niosh's branch office in Labuan would enable it to help provide services on occupational safety and health to all tourism operators that needed them.  -- BERNAMA
