KUCHING: Sarawak Energy has made a strong commitment to raise the standards of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) in its practices, which is to embrace contractors and villages too.

Speaking at the recent launching of HSE Week Campaign held at Sejingkat Power Corporation, a subsidiary of Sarawak Energy, its chief executive officer Datuk Torstein Dale Sjotveit said with the injection of new and higher standards of HSE practices and concepts, Sarawak Energy hopes to speed up the development of excellent HSE culture in the company.

In his speech, he touched on the importance of nurturing the HSE culture in day-to-day work and workplaces not only to Sarawak Energy staff and its operation, but also to the contractors.

He stressed on the need to closely monitor the operation of contractors under Sarawak Energy and setting the same standards to avoid injuries and fatalities among the workers due to noncompliance of rules and procedures.

Sarawak Energy, as of today, has achieved a zero fatality rate for our employees and contractors for this year, said Sjotveit, reinforcing the achievements of Sarawak Energy in terms of safety.

Sjotveit also highlighted four main values relevant to uplift the standards of HSE which are responsibility, accountability, teamwork and being proactive.

He reiterated that HSE awareness must start at individual level before the culture can be embraced at departmental and organisational levels.

Another highlight of the event was a series of public talks on safety and environment to five nearby villages. Sarawak Energy has been spreading awareness among the public on the importance of going to school safely to establish a statewide culture of safety at a young age.

This year, villages were selected to further create awareness on safety culture and environment.

The HSE Week Campaign in Sarawak Energy was held at Sejingkat Power Corporation, a subsidiary of Sarawak Energy. This annual event has reached its fifth year under the initiative of Corporate Risk and HSE Department, aimed to raise awareness and remind the staff on Sarawak Energy’s commitment to occupational health, safety and environment.

This year’s HSE Week Campaign saw the biggest participation from contingents of HSE personnel from power stations and regional offices for the safety games. Themed ‘Raising Standard, Saving Lives, Nurturing Culture,’ the campaign aimed to achieve zero harm to the employees, contractors and other stakeholders in its operations.
