The Star Online, 20 August 2015
The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) in 2014 found 2,747 escalators and lifts in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya which failed to meet standard safety requirements as they did not comply with the Factories And Machinery Act and Occupational Safety and Health Act. Seven machineries maintenance firms and building owners were issued compounds, while another seven were charged over their failure to adhere to the law. DOSH director Abdul Kahar Husain said since 2010, a total of 111 accidents related to faulty lifts and escalators were reported which resulted in 11 deaths. "90% of the victims were children because they lose balance easily and also due to adults' negligence," he said. Although the number of accidents and deaths are not at an alarming level, Abdul Kahar said it was still necessary to take preventive measures to ensure all safety aspects were fulfilled.
