New Straits Time Online, 01 September 2016

KAMPAR: The National Institute of Occupational and Health (NIOSH) has identified three high-risk industries which contribute to the highest cases of workplace accidents in the country.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the top contributor was the construction industry, followed by manufacturing and transportation.

He said the latest incident, where a 24-year-old woman was killed when a crane hook fell on her car at Jalan Raja Chulan, Kuala Lumpur, showed that rapid development was one of the factors why the construction industry topped the list.

Lee also revealed that last year, 62,863 workplace accidents were reported by the Social Security Organisation nationwide.

He said 34, 272 of the cases were classified as industrial accidents and 28,591 cases were commuting accidents.

"Commuting accidents are also very alarming when it has increased 65.3 per cent in 2015 compared to 2005," he said after awarding the Kampar District Council (MDKpr) with the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (Ohsas) 18001: 2007, here today.

Lee said the MDKpr was the second local authority which has received the award after the Seberang Prai Municipal Council.

"I hope MDKpr's success will encourage others to obtain the certification," he said.
