Four construction workers were “seriously injured” when the lifting chain on a crane loaded with construction waste snapped and fell to the bottom of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) underground station site along Jalan Cochrane.
Thankfully, the incidents above were only part of an emergency drill organised for the first time by MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd (MGKT), the main contractor for the KVMRT Underground package.
MGKT construction manager Ng Hau Wei said about 50 on-site personnel and volunteers from St John Ambulance took part in the emergency drill exercise recently.
“The drill was to simulate a real emergency and to test the capability and readiness of the Emergency Response Team (ERT) during an emergency,” he said.
During the drill which lasted 30 minutes, the ERT search and rescue team was sent to the site of the “accident” to clear the scene to initiate rescue efforts.
The injured workers, which had expert make-up applied to reflect their respective injuries, were treated according to their “injuries”.
“Most of the injuries looked very realistic and the “injured workers” acted very well. As part of the drill, we also paid attention to how the first aid personnel treated and handled people based on the severity of their injuries,” Ng who was also the ERT commander during drill said.
The mock patients were lifted to a safe zone at the shaft surface with the help from St. John Ambulance and MKGT’s ERT before the victims were rushed to HUKM.
“I believe we managed to achieve the targets we set out. The timing of the various stages within the emergency drill was good and we hope to improve on them further,” he said.
It is learnt that more of such drills have been planned for the future to ensure its Emergency Response Team is always prepared and ready in the event of a real emergency taking place at its site.
